Finland controlled the first period of the gold medal game and surprised the Swedish team by four goals. However, floorball is a tricky sport and since the Swedes managed to equalize, the history was rewritten after the overtime only. After winning the title of World Champions the Finnish coach was really proud of his players.
“In the dressing room before the game we talked about the yesterday’s game and that today we have to go and make it as well,” the Finnish coach Petteri Nykky revealed. Even at the moment when the Swedes equalized he encouraged his players to believe in their abilities to be able to get to game into a victorious end. “The guys did an amazing job,” the coach praised his team that was the first in history to beat the team of Sweden at the World Championship.
According to the Finnish captain Mika Kohonen the entire Championship was a great experience. Nevertheless, at the press conference he also had to mention troubles his team encountered during the group stage games: “For me, the Championship also meant a lot of time spent at the hotel, but the guys worked hard to get to this game and try to win. Honestly, this was the craziest game I’ve ever played,” Kohonen added with a smile.
